I’m obsessed. With what, you say? South African style. Something about all that juxtaposition of color, water, European culture, and tribal wilderness sings a song to my soul. Linda, my design partner, just returned from visiting her daughter in Capetown, South Africa while she was traveling abroad at Semester at Sea. And what a treat that was. The images she took speak to the people that live there, the animals, the gorgeous wild sea.

While she was planning this trip, I started noticing how this trend was taking off everywhere! I’ve always been fascinated with the South Africans and their beautiful voices. We have a large population here in Cleveland. But today the culture seems to be everywhere!  From super adorable colorful kidswear over at the Tea Collection, to handcrafted local artisan jewelry,

And fair trade items that are growing in popularity in the design community, such as this amazing pottery that is now carried at larger retailers like West Elm, South African style is catching on locally and becoming very hip and mainstream!

So what is South African style? We all know that animal print is a basic these days in design. Who doesn’t need a little Zebra or Cheetah print in their design? Yes! But in reality it is an infusion of colors or a clean sophistication that has a rustic element that truly hits the bullseye on design. Whether you are a traveler with found objects or just an admirer of local cultures, adding some of these handmade elements can evoke this growing design trend.

So if you are looking for a design update for Spring, channel some Teddy Roosevelt, think hunting lodges and hides, but add a little air of sophistication and try this evolved version of South Africa. You’ll feel like you are on a safari right in your own home!
